Ever picked up a new MMO class, read its ability list, and thought, "Wait, I need a PhD to play this?" We've all been there. Some classes are so needlessly convoluted that they make your head spin. But which one takes the cake for being the most overly and unnecessarily complicated?
It all started with a recent Massively OP article about Warframe's Equinox frame. The writer pointed out that Equinox is essentially two frames in one—day and night forms—each with its own abilities. Sounds cool, right? But in practice, it's a hot mess. To maximize her damage, you have to juggle forms, manage separate energy pools, and memorize complex ability combos that would make a chess grandmaster sweat.
This got us thinking: MMOs are full of classes that are complex for complexity's sake. You know the type—the ones where you need a 30-page guide just to understand the basic rotation. Take the Arcanist in Final Fantasy XIV, for instance. It's a pet class that also has to manage a DoT, a buff, and a resource system that's tied to your pet's actions. And if your pet dies? Good luck catching up on your damage.
Or how about the Mesmer in Guild Wars 2? It's a class that creates illusions, shatters them for various effects, and clones yourself to confuse enemies. But with the introduction of the Chronomancer elite spec, things went from confusing to utterly bonkers. You're now manipulating time, creating portals, and juggling alacrity and quickness—all while trying not to break your brain.
And let's not forget the classic example: the original Rune Master in Rift. This class had a combo system where you'd build up runes and then spend them in specific orders to unleash powerful abilities. It was so complex that most players just avoided it altogether, despite its potential for massive damage.
But here's the thing: complexity isn't always a bad thing. Some players love the challenge of mastering a difficult class. It gives them a sense of accomplishment and sets them apart from the casual crowd. However, there's a fine line between challenging and frustrating. When a class becomes so convoluted that it's no longer fun to play, that's a problem.
So, what's the most overly and unnecessarily complicated class you've ever played? Was it a WoW class with a million buffs to track? A SWTOR class with a rotation that changes based on procs? Or maybe something from a lesser-known MMO that made you want to rage quit? Share your horror stories in the comments below—we'd love to hear your picks for the most absurdly complex class in MMO history!
