GTA 5 Switch Port Mod Shuts Down After Take-Two Intervention

Ever dreamed of playing GTA 5 on your Nintendo Switch? Well, that dream just got a whole lot less likely. The modder behind an unofficial Switch port of GTA 5 has announced that the project is shutting down after Take-Two Interactive stepped in.

The project was helmed by Paralympics Productions, a self-described "very serious game development studio" (with tongue firmly in cheek). They officially unveiled their Switch port back in August on X, and things had been quiet since. That silence was broken when Rockstar Games rolled out strict new modding and porting guidelines earlier this month, making it clear that ports to unofficial platforms are a no-go. The guidelines state: "Do not modify our games to operate on consoles, hardware devices, or other platforms where they have not been officially released by Rockstar Games."

It didn't take long for Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, to notice. Project lead "Mojso" confirmed the shutdown in a post, writing: "Paralympics Productions is shutting down on October 3rd. Thank you everyone who supported us through tough times and lengthy development. I am sorry for not fulfilling your expectations and leaving you high and dry." He also expressed gratitude for Take-Two's mercy, saying, "I am thankful for Take-Two's mercy so this is the definitive end."

So, what exactly went down? It seems Take-Two opted for a warning and takedown order rather than a full-blown lawsuit. Mojso acknowledged that he "wouldn't win in court most likely" since Rockstar has "solid grounds," and he "can't even appeal to a jury or something like I didn't know what I was getting into." He also revealed that the port "was gonna release in the coming days" and wished Take-Two had given him more time, but it's all moot now. As for future projects, Mojso was clear: "I'm not releasing anything new and I'm not coming back." He added, "It's truly over."

This isn't the first time modders have tried to bring GTA 5 to Switch. Back in 2024, after the game's source code leaked, modders managed to get it running on Nintendo's console. But with Rockstar's recent guideline changes, it's looking increasingly unlikely that such projects will ever see the light of day. It's a disappointing outcome for Switch owners and GTA fans alike, but not entirely surprising given the legal landscape.

For now, it seems the only way to play GTA 5 on a Nintendo system is to wait for an official release—which, let's be honest, probably isn't happening anytime soon. So, what do you think? Were you hoping to play GTA 5 on your Switch, or is this just another case of modders pushing their luck? Let us know in the comments!
