This Hilarious AAA Minesweeper Parody Is a Must-Play

Ever wondered what Minesweeper would look like if a big-budget studio got its hands on it? Well, wonder no more – writer and programmer Mike Lacher has created a hilarious parody called Triple-A Minesweeper, and it's fully playable right now in your browser.

The game starts with intentionally pretentious title cards boasting the involvement of Unreal Engine, Nvidia, Bink Video, and Wwise – just like a real AAA release. But once you start playing, it looks and plays almost exactly like the classic Minesweeper you know and love. The twist? The best way to enjoy it is to do absolutely nothing.

Your character, "Sweeper," sits around repeating lines like, "I gotta sweep these mines," while receiving calls from a cast of quirky characters. There's Nora, a potential love interest; The Don, an underworld figure who keeps inviting you to his club and hinting at your sinister past in Singapore; and DJ Dan, who cheerfully celebrates your efforts on behalf of New Dawn City. It's a clear nod to games like Grand Theft Auto 5, Metal Gear Solid, and Cyberpunk 2077.

What makes it even funnier is that Sweeper never acknowledges any of the callers – he just keeps repeating the same lines over and over. It's a brilliant satire of how AAA games often prioritize style over substance, and it's sure to make you chuckle.

If you do decide to actually play, you can complete the game, which triggers a twist ending that's probably not too hard to predict. But the journey is worth it for the laughs alone. Lacher leaves it there, though it would've been even funnier if the game's coda mentioned that Triple-A Minesweeper flopped and cost Microsoft hundreds of millions of dollars – a jab at the real-world AAA industry.

Microsoft hasn't done much with Minesweeper in recent years, aside from adding it to Microsoft Teams as a playable game and creating a Minesweeper-themed ugly Christmas sweater. So this parody feels like a loving tribute to a classic that's ripe for a modern (and ridiculous) update.

Will you be giving Triple-A Minesweeper a try? What do you think a real AAA Minesweeper would look like? Let us know in the comments!
