Ever spotted something in a game that looked so off you wondered if AI made it? That's exactly what happened to some eagle-eyed fans in Marvel's Wolverine.
They found a bathroom sign that looked, well, weird. Naturally, folks started speculating: did Insomniac Games use generative AI to create assets? The rumor spread fast.
But according to Insomniac's community and marketing director James Stevenson, that's simply not true. He explained that the odd-looking sign is actually the result of a "UV map bug"—a technical glitch, not AI. A fix is already in the works. "There are no AI-generated assets in Marvel's Wolverine," Stevenson said.
So there you have it: no sneaky AI, just a texture mapping mistake. It's a good reminder that not every visual oddity is a sign of automation—sometimes it's just a bug.
Of course, that doesn't mean Insomniac is anti-AI altogether. Their previous game, 2023's Spider-Man 2, used machine-learning to help speed up development, and the studio plans to keep using it in the future. But for now, it seems AI-generated assets are off the table.
Marvel's Wolverine launched on September 15 and has been a smash hit, reportedly surpassing the lifetime sales of Death Stranding 2 on PS5 right out of the gate. GameSpot's review gave it an 8/10, with reviewer Tamoor Hussain calling it "at best, a fun but forgettable experience that'll entertain you for a few hours."
While Wolverine might be in the clear, other games aren't. Activision's Call of Duty titles use generative AI, and Sega's upcoming Crazy Taxi: World Tour will too. So the debate around AI in games is far from over.
What do you think? Are you relieved that Wolverine is AI-free, or does it not matter to you? Let us know in the comments!
