Well, this is a juicy one. According to a report from Tweak Town, well-known leaker and industry insider Kepler_L2 says AMD is quietly working on its own version of DLSS 5-style neural rendering for next-gen gaming hardware. And if that pans out, it could be a huge deal for consoles, not just PCs.
So what's AMD cooking? The tech is reportedly being called "Neural Lighting." That's a pretty telling name, because "neural rendering" is a broad umbrella that covers basically any technique where a neural network replaces or enhances the work shaders normally do. That means AMD's take could dig much deeper into game engines and rendering pipelines than a simple post-process effect.
Here's where it gets interesting. NVIDIA's DLSS 5, by comparison, relies on a general screen-space model. Developers and artists feed it input, and it tweaks a frame that's already been rendered. AMD's approach sounds like it wants to get its hands dirty earlier in the process.
In fact, AMD may have already tipped its hand. A recent GPUOpen research paper titled "Lightweight attention-based indirect illumination" hints at how this could work. In plain English, it's an AI-driven real-time global illumination (GI) technique. Instead of only using what's visible on screen, it also pulls data from the game engine, including geometry that's outside the camera's view. The result? Better shadows and lighting detail.
But don't think this is just about prettier shadows. DLSS 5 also aims to boost things like character skin and material details for more realistic visuals, and AMD's version likely has similar ambitions. Kepler_L2 notes that AMD's implementation might be limited to RDNA 5, simply because running complex neural rendering models is computationally expensive.
And that's the part that should get console fans excited. RDNA 5 is expected to power the next generation of Radeon RX 10000 series GPUs, plus the PS6 and Xbox's Project Helix hardware. Tweak Town's analysis suggests AMD's DLSS 5 rival could very well land on consoles, not just PC. That feels even more likely given that both Sony and Microsoft are already hyping advanced neural rendering as a key feature of their next-gen hardware.
So yeah, the next console war might not just be about teraflops. It could come down to whose AI upscaling and neural rendering chops are stronger. If AMD can pull this off across both PC and consoles, NVIDIA might finally have some real competition in the neural rendering space.
