Kratos has been through a lot over the years — dead gods, angry gods, his own son — but apparently the thing fans can't stop talking about is his beard. And honestly? Fair.
When God of War: Laufey launches on February 16, 2027, it'll mark nearly nine years since 2018's God of War rebooted the series. Over that stretch, Kratos' model has gone through multiple rounds of iteration, and the upcoming game is bringing yet another upgraded version of everyone's favorite grumpy dad.
The 2018 God of War was a full-on reset. Kratos went from rage-fueled Greek god of war to a quiet father figure wandering the Norse snow, and his face alone packed around 32,000 polygons, with the full model totaling roughly 80,000. For a PS4 game at the time, that was seriously impressive — the beard rendering and skin texture details represented Santa Monica Studio's best work up to that point.
Then came 2022's God of War Ragnarök, and Kratos bulked up. Reddit players noticed the new version looked like he'd "gained about 20 pounds," with thicker muscle definition and richer skin textures and scar details. But this wasn't just a tech flex — it matched the story. After years in the Norse realms, Kratos had gradually loosened up, and the physical change echoed his internal shift.
Now, with God of War: Laufey, Kratos' model is leveling up once again. In new screenshots revealed in September 2026, Kratos appears in an ancient Greek-style temple setting, and players are describing his beard as "thicker than ever." The rendering detail on PS5 Pro is leaving quite an impression.
From the snowy plains of the Norse realms to the temples of ancient Greece, from silent father to a warrior facing his past once more, each version of Kratos' model maps to a different chapter of his life. God of War: Laufey arrives exclusively on PS5 on February 16, 2027 — and when it does, we'll finally see the latest answer to nine years of evolution.
So what do you think — is this the best Kratos has ever looked, or are you still partial to the classic bald-and-angry era? Let us know in the comments.
