Diablo 5 Combat: Faster, More Visceral, Still Isometric

Ever wondered what Diablo 5's combat will actually feel like? Blizzard's not tearing up the rulebook—they're just making it spin faster. At BlizzCon 2026, executive producer Matt Zitterman told GameSpot that the team is sticking with the isometric action-RPG formula but cranking up the action. "We're not looking to shake that up," he said. "We're looking to improve on it, evolve it... make combat feel even more visceral, even more action-forward." That means building on the fast combat that started in Diablo 3 and improved in Diablo 4.

So what does that mean for you? If you loved the pace of Diablo 4, expect more of that—but turned up a notch. Zitterman says the goal is to take that fast, fluid combat even further. Think quicker decisions, more visceral feedback, and a combat loop that keeps you on your toes.

But Blizzard isn't just looking forward; they're also digging into the past. Zitterman explained that Diablo 5 aims to have something for every fan, no matter which entry was your favorite. "We want Diablo 5 to be a game that feels like it has elements for you, regardless of which Diablo game was your favorite," he said. That includes itemization inspired by Diablo 2, plus ideas pulled from Diablo 3 and Diablo 4. It's a best-of approach, but with a fresh twist.

The story picks up decades after the Lord of Terror conquered Sanctuary. This time, there's no safe harbor or stronghold to fall back on—you'll have to keep moving, recruiting allies to your caravan of survivors. It's a darker, more desperate world, and you're always on the run.

And if you like variety, Diablo 5 has you covered. It'll offer more playable classes than ever before, including the return of the Monk and Demon Hunter, plus the all-new Plague Knight—a class that spreads disease and pestilence across the battlefield. That's a whole new way to dish out damage.
