WoW Forever on ROG Xbox Ally X: A 'Fever Dream' Come True

Ever dreamed of playing World of Warcraft on a handheld Xbox? That dream is now a reality, and early impressions are glowing.

Last Sunday, we reported that World of Warcraft: Forever — Blizzard's new game, currently in beta ahead of its November release — is adding native Xbox controller support. We hadn't tried it ourselves yet, but it seems this is now the best way to play World of Warcraft on an Xbox device.

Windows Central editor Jez Corden got his hands on it over the past 24 hours, and he says the native Xbox controller support makes it feel "like a fever dream" to play WoW on the Ally X. That's high praise from someone who's likely logged countless hours with a mouse and keyboard.

So why is this such a big deal? The ROG Xbox Ally X is a handheld gaming PC, and playing a traditionally mouse-and-keyboard MMO like WoW on it could have been a clunky experience. But with native Xbox controller support, it sounds like the transition is seamless — no third-party workarounds, no awkward button mapping. Just pick up and play.

Of course, this is still beta, and the game doesn't launch until November. But if the early buzz is any indication, WoW: Forever could set a new standard for how MMOs feel on handhelds. And for Xbox fans, it's another reason to be excited about the Ally X.
