Ever felt like a doll was watching you? Well, in Where Dolls Hang, they definitely are. This upcoming survival horror game from solo developer Steelkrill Studio is tapping into a real-life nightmare: the haunted dolls of Mexico's Isla de las Muñecas, or Island of the Dolls. And it's not just inspiration—some of the doll models are created using actual photographs from the island.
The Island of the Dolls has a creepy history. Over the past 80 years, folklore has sprung up around the bald, cobwebbed dolls nailed to trees. Legend says they contain the spirit of a drowned little girl, a story caretaker Don Julian Santana may or may not have invented. He spent much of his life fishing plastic Barbies and babies out of the water near his home to honor her spirit. Now, those same disturbing dolls are starring in a video game.
Where Dolls Hang was featured in the Horror Game Awards' recent showcase this past summer. The developer, Steelkrill, explained on Twitter that "some of the doll models you'll find were created using real photographs" and that "the photographs can also be found around in the game." A gameplay clip shows a first-person view of a doll head covered in dirt and raindrop pimples. The player drops a photo and looks up to see the same pimply doll head impaled on a pike right in front of them. It's the kind of moment that makes you double-check your surroundings.
A press release for the game says this creates "an unusual connection between the game's horrors and reality: something disturbing hanging in a room or sitting in the darkness may not have been designed entirely from imagination." It adds, "Somewhere in the world, there may be a real photograph behind it." That makes Where Dolls Hang a rare game based on a true story—because sometimes real life is freakier than fiction.
Where Dolls Hang is scheduled for a 2026 release date and is available to wishlist now on Steam. If you're a fan of survival horror that blurs the line between game and reality, this is one to keep on your radar. The idea that the dolls you encounter might be based on actual cursed objects? That's the kind of thing that stays with you.
