GTA 6's Jaw-Dropping Visuals Lock It at 30FPS, Experts Say

Digital Foundry calls GTA 6 the most visually advanced game yet, but its fidelity comes at a cost: a locked 30fps, with no 60fps mode expected on current consoles.

GTA 6's Jaw-Dropping Visuals Lock It at 30FPS, Experts Say

Ever wonder why some games just look so good that they make your console sweat? Well, Grand Theft Auto 6 might be the ultimate test. After the first big gameplay reveal, tech gurus at Digital Foundry have crowned it the most visually impressive game to date. But there's a catch: it's locked at 30fps. Is that a dealbreaker or a necessary trade-off?

Digital Foundry's Oliver Mackenzie didn't hold back, calling GTA 6 "the most impressive example of real-time game rendering" he's ever seen. Alongside Richard Leadbetter, they dove deep into the trailer, praising everything from character rendering—especially the hair physics and skin details on both the protagonist and NPCs—to the clever use of ray tracing. Rockstar didn't just splash ray tracing everywhere; they used it strategically where it counts, blending it with traditional methods for that sweet spot between looks and performance.

Now, about that performance. Remember GTA 5's rocky launch on PS3 and Xbox 360? Rockstar's always been about pushing visuals over smoothness, but with GTA 6, they seem to have found a balance. The game runs at 30fps, but it's a consistent 30fps. Digital Foundry analyzed every single frame—48,242 of them—and found barely any dips. That's rock solid, even if it's not 60.

Here's the tech breakdown: the gameplay preview ran at native 1440p, upscaled to 4K without modern upscaling tricks, resulting in a slightly soft image. Hopefully, that'll be polished before launch. But the big question: will we ever see a 60fps mode? Digital Foundry says don't hold your breath. They predict no 60fps mode on current consoles, even with compromises. The PS5 Pro might offer better ray tracing or higher resolution, but the CPU is the bottleneck. With so much simulation happening in the world, halving frame time is nearly impossible without a beefier processor. Maybe a future PC release will show us what's possible.

So, what does this mean for you? If you're all about that buttery-smooth gameplay, 30fps might sting. But if you're after the most jaw-dropping open world ever crafted, GTA 6 seems worth the trade-off. And hey, there's plenty more to get excited about—like the return of six-star wanted levels, petting (or scolding) dogs, and a love story you can skip if you want.

Will you be picking up GTA 6 at launch, or are you waiting for that PC version? Let us know in the comments!
