Ever wished you could skip the hours of painting and just get straight to gaming? That's exactly what Warhammer 40,000 Battlefields: Armageddon promises, and after spending a few hours with it, I'm convinced it's a must-buy for anyone who values their time.
Let's face it: Warhammer is a time-consuming hobby. Whether you're building a Kill Team or a full army, assembling and painting terrain often falls to the bottom of the to-do list. This new set bypasses all that by providing fully painted terrain straight out of the box. The result? Impressive.
Battlefields: Armageddon is available to pre-order now from Warhammer, with a release date of October 31. It's worth checking indie retailers like Miniature Market in the US or Wayland Games in the UK for discounts. Expect to pay around the cost of two Combat Patrol box sets – roughly $350/220 – but considering the time you'll save, it's a worthwhile investment.
The concept is simple: speedrun a full Warhammer 40K board with minimal effort. The pieces arrive painted on the sprue, so all you need to do is clip them out and slot them together – no glue required. While the claim of 'battlefield in minutes' might be a bit generous (constructing it all will take an hour or two), that's still a fraction of the time it'd take to make and paint everything by hand.
Some might be put off by the grainy style, a side-effect of UV printing, but I think it works with 40K's grungy aesthetic. The scenery is low-key, letting your models pop against the backdrop. It's also more accurate than expected – some finer details get lost, but the overall look is precise and neat.
Is it perfect? Not quite. The sprue connectors leave small nubs of gray plastic, though many are hidden on the finished product, and the grungy nature of the terrain obscures them unless you look closely. Even as someone who enjoys crafting battlefields, I get worn down painting fiddly details. This set lets you bypass that effort and get a good-looking table ready with minimal fuss.
I'm excited to see where this idea goes next – a pre-painted Kill Team or Age of Sigmar board would be amazing. Will you be picking up Battlefields: Armageddon? Let us know in the comments!
