Did you ever think you'd see Shrek 2: The Game make a comeback? Well, according to a now-deleted Xbox Store listing, a remaster of the 2004 co-op brawler is heading to modern platforms, and Aspyr—the studio behind the Star Wars: KOTOR remasters—is at the helm.
The original Shrek 2: The Game launched on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube, mixing beat 'em up action with light puzzles, mini-games, and button-prompt QTEs. You could play the whole thing in co-op, controlling not just Shrek but also Fiona, Donkey, Puss, and a bunch of other fairytale creatures. It was a fun little romp, especially with pals or siblings eager to make a mess in the swamp.
The deleted store page and a leaked trailer suggest much of the original remains intact, but with some modern upgrades: support for 4K resolutions, improved textures, and an enhanced UI. A new Photo Mode and Cheat Mode also seem to be part of the package. No release date or pricing details yet, but it's likely to launch on PC, PS5, and Nintendo consoles alongside the Xbox version.
Aspyr has a solid track record of bringing back old-school fan favorites. Recently, the studio remastered The Lord of the Rings: War in the North and several Star Wars classics like KOTOR, Bounty Hunter, and The Force Unleashed. So, they know a thing or two about reviving cult classics.
Of course, Shrek 2: The Game wasn't exactly a critical darling back in the day. GamesRadar's original review said it "only really has any merit in so far as it isn't quite as bad as some other games." Here's hoping the friendly AI aren't as useless as they were 22 years ago.
DreamWorks' juggernaut film franchise is also preparing for a big comeback. Shrek 5 hits theaters next summer, marking the series' first big screen feature in 16 years. All four previous films have grossed over $3 billion worldwide altogether, unadjusted for inflation. And everyone is saying the same thing about the new Shrek 5 teaser—why does Fiona look like that?
Will you be picking up this remaster for a nostalgic trip back to Far Far Away? What do you think?
