A brand-new Chinese mythological ARPG just dropped a ton of details, and it's aiming straight for the stars. Genigods: Feng Lixi, from developer Genigods Lab, is being built in Unreal Engine 5 and hopes to carve out its own space in the Chinese AAA mythology scene that Black Myth: Wukong kicked open.

Here's the twist: this isn't another Nezha retelling. The game pulls you all the way back to the dawn of creation. You play as Lingzhu, the first life form shaped by Nuwa from earth, water, and fire, growing from a blank-slate origin into Nezha himself. Along the way you'll live through Pangu's slumber, the ten suns scorching the sky, and the collapse of the heavenly pillar, all while carrying a triple destiny: mending the heavens, tracing your origins, and sealing temporal rifts. The main story is planned for around 25 hours, with multiple endings to chase.

Combat is where things get really interesting. The team says it fused the high-speed clashes of Dragon Ball, the epic storytelling of God of War 3, and the fighting-game logic of Street Fighter into one seamless air-and-ground system. You can swap freely between ranged and melee, using spear thrusts and heavy strikes up close or picking enemies off with a bow, then close the gap instantly for airborne combos. It's meant to be fast, flashy, and still deep enough for players who like to lab their options.

The devs are especially proud of their "water philosophy." Drawing on Bruce Lee's "be like water" idea and the essence of Jeet Kune Do, the system is all about flow, adaptation, and blending offense with defense. You can condense water into armor-breaking inch punches and sweeping dragon kicks, or use divine power flow for precise parries and counters. They're explicitly positioning this as something different from the heavy tug-of-war of Soulslike combat or Devil May Cry's pure style combos. On top of that, there's a unique treasure fusion system that lets you combine mythological artifacts like Houyi's divine bow and the Banana Fan to unlock exclusive techniques.

Scale is a big selling point too. The game leans hard into "giant god battlefields," letting you climb the bodies of ancient titans like Kuafu mid-fight, or ascend the Fusang divine tree that links heaven and earth. You'll even recreate iconic mythological moments like Houyi shooting down the suns. Technically, the team customized Unreal Engine 5 to handle real-time fluid simulation, dynamic weather, and scene destruction, with art that pulls from Dunhuang murals and traditional porcelain curves for a properly epic Eastern wasteland.

As for the bigger picture, the creators say Black Myth: Wukong showed the world what Chinese mythology can do at AAA scale, and it solidified their own commitment. Feng Lixi isn't a one-off, it's the opening chapter of a full Chinese creation-myth trilogy, with plans to expand into Yanhuang, the ancient gods, and more, building a dedicated Eastern mythology game universe. They're also trying to balance accessibility with depth: you can pre-configure combo strings, so even newcomers can pull off flashy plays.

On the question of Japanese localization and the Japan market, the team was upfront. No Japanese language support has been announced yet, but Japan remains a key overseas market for them. The lead dev says he's personally a huge fan of classic Japanese games like Final Fantasy, and the studio is working closely with PlayStation, genuinely hoping their game resonates with Japanese players.

The game is headed to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. So what do you think, does a Bruce Lee-inspired Nezha action game sound like your kind of chaos? Let us know in the comments.
