Did you ever think you'd see the day when Star Wars: The Old Republic outlived BioWare? Well, that day is here. EA shut down BioWare earlier today, and SWTOR fans are taking to Reddit to mourn the legendary RPG developer.
BioWare originally developed SWTOR, which launched back in 2011. The studio supported the MMO until 2023, when EA handed maintenance duties over to Broadsword Games. But BioWare still wrote and developed the bulk of the game's story content, so it's no surprise the community wants to pay respects.
Reddit user WarlockingIn posted BioWare's farewell statement on the SWTOR subreddit, and within hours it racked up nearly 5,000 upvotes and 742 comments. Fans shared memories and frustrations, with Bae_the_Elf writing, "RIP. One of the greatest gaming studios of all time in my opinion. Sad to see how corporate mismanagement and time sadly lead to the downfall of this studio."
Others were more emotional. AnnoyedYamcha said, "NO. Not BIOWARE! They made so many great games. What the hell is going on!!! They were the bar for RPG's. KOTOR, MASS EFFECT, DRAGON AGE, JADE EMPIRE, they were all great!"
Some fans were struck by the irony of SWTOR outlasting its creator. The top comment, from Inangelion, simply reads, "SWTOR outlives Bioware. What a strange timeline." Others expressed relief that Broadsword took over. Dangerously_Stupid commented, "You know, a few years ago I was upset that BioWare was giving up SWTOR and handing it to Broadsword. I am no longer upset by that." KukiBreeze added, "Thank you Broadsword, a sh*tty day could have been 1000x sh*ttier otherwise."
SWTOR fans aren't alone in mourning. People across the internet have reacted to the closure, and the fact that we'll never get Mass Effect 5. But for now, SWTOR lives on, with hundreds of hours of peak BioWare storytelling still playable.
What do you think about BioWare's closure? Will you be logging into SWTOR to pay your respects?
