Physint: Everything We Know About Kojima's Next Game

Hideo Kojima's Physint is a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid, now published by Xbox. Here's everything we know about the release date, cast, gameplay, and development.

Physint: Everything We Know About Kojima's Next Game

Ever wonder what happens when the mind behind Metal Gear Solid decides to make a game that blurs the line between movies and interactive entertainment? That's exactly what Hideo Kojima is doing with Physint, and it's already generating serious buzz even though it's years away.

First revealed during the PlayStation State of Play in January 2024, Physint is a return to the tactics, espionage, and action roots that made Kojima a legend. But don't expect to play it anytime soon. Kojima himself has said the earliest release window could be as far away as 2030, and as of 2025, the game was still in a "conceptual" stage of development.

So what do we actually know? For starters, the cast is stacked. Swedish actor Bill Skarsgard (It, Boy Kills World) will play the lead role, and he's joined by Charlee Fraser (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), Don Lee (Train to Busan), and Minami Hamabe (Godzilla: Minus One). Kojima has already done costume fittings, scans, and camera tests with Skarsgard and Fraser, and he's clearly thrilled about it. "We are both longtime fans of each other's work, and we've decided to embark on this new adventure together," Kojima said in a press statement.

In terms of gameplay, details are still scarce. The only visual we've seen is a teaser poster featuring a shadowy protagonist, with the tagline "here comes the feeling." Kojima has teased that Physint will "break the barrier" between movies and games. In a HideoTube episode, he said, "If your mother walks in and sees you playing this game, she'll think you're watching a movie. I'm not sure how far we can take it yet." We also know it's a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid, inspired by fan requests and Kojima's own recovery from a severe illness during the COVID pandemic.

Development hasn't been smooth sailing, though. Physint was originally a PlayStation partnership, but Sony later confirmed it would no longer work with Kojima Productions on the game. While no official reason was given, industry chatter suggested concerns over missed deadlines and budget issues, as reported by Bloomberg. Fortunately, Xbox stepped in to save the project. "We're honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on Physint," said Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. "His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox."

As for platforms, with the game so far away, a next-gen release seems likely. Now that Xbox is publishing and helping develop it, expect it to launch for PC and whatever form the next-gen Xbox console, Project Helix, eventually takes. Kojima has assured fans that despite the publisher change, development on Physint "is ongoing and will continue moving forward."

So there you have it: a star-studded cast, a legendary creator, and a publisher switch that could shape the future of the project. It's going to be a long wait, but if anyone can deliver a genre-defining experience, it's Kojima. What do you think? Are you excited to see what Physint becomes, or are you worried about the long development timeline? Let us know in the comments!
