Dark Souls 2 Finally Gets Seamless Co-op After 12 Years

A new mod for Dark Souls 2 removes fog walls, syncs progression, and lets up to five players co-op without interruptions, 12 years after release.

Dark Souls 2 Finally Gets Seamless Co-op After 12 Years

Ever wanted to play Dark Souls 2 with friends without all the frustrating stops and starts? You're not alone. Twelve years after the game first launched, a modder named Yui has finally made that dream a reality with Dark Souls 2: Seamless Co-op.

The mod just released into alpha last week and promises a straightforward co-op experience with up to five other players. According to the release blog on Patreon, it's theoretically possible to play from the tutorial all the way to the final boss in one continuous co-op session. Imagine that—no more summoning, no more fog walls, just pure uninterrupted jolly cooperation.

If you've ever tried to co-op in the original Dark Souls 2, you know the pain. It involved a lot of stopping, starting, summoning, and waiting at fog walls. With this mod, those barriers are gone. Progression is synced up, and when someone dies, they simply respawn at their last bonfire instead of ending the session. It's a much smoother way to enjoy the game with friends.

But don't worry—Yui hasn't stripped away all the mystery. The mod's features are accessed through unique items with names like 'Pharros' Heliograph' and 'Petrified Fingers.' So there's still a bit of that Dark Souls flavor to discover. As Yui notes in the release blog, it's a very different—and much easier—way to play DS2, but a welcome one for those who've been exploring its every corner since release.

Yui is no stranger to this kind of work. She's made similar mods for Elden Ring and Dark Souls, and she's been aggressively supporting this one since release. She already patched out a major performance glitch that affected players with Intel processors. If you run into problems, be sure to check back on the Nexus page or her Patreon—she may have already fixed it.

So whether you're a veteran looking for a fresh way to experience Drangleic or a newcomer who's been intimidated by the game's esoteric multiplayer, this mod opens up a whole new way to play. It's a testament to the dedicated modding community that a 12-year-old game can still get such a meaningful update.
