GTA 6 Weather Will Blow You Away: Storms, Hurricanes, and More

Ever wondered what it'd be like to face a full-blown hurricane in a video game? Well, Grand Theft Auto 6 might just give you that chance. Rockstar has confirmed that the game's weather system will simulate tropical storms and hurricanes, taking open-world weather to a whole new level.

We already knew GTA 6 would have an advanced weather system, but this is something else. In Game Informer's cover story, senior associate editor Marcus Stewart highlighted the need for diverse weather in Leonida, the game's fictional Florida setting, because of the state's wild climate shifts. Rockstar's vice president of art for lighting and rendering, Owen Shepherd, told Stewart, "We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent," adding that "the world features new fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map."

Considering GTA 6's map is three times larger than those in GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, simulating moving storm systems is seriously impressive. In practice, you could see localized rain showers in one area while the next is sunny. But it's not just about visuals – weather will have lasting effects on the environment. According to Stewart, "GTA 6's rain creates realistic rainbows under the right lighting conditions, and recently showered areas will remain wet on the ground and create persistent puddles once the storm passes."

And if you thought thunderstorms were intense, just wait. Florida is known for its unpredictable weather, and GTA 6 will simulate tropical storms and hurricanes that wreak havoc on the environment. Shepherd describes these storms as having "heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics and a lot of rain combine so that everything is dripping wet, water is gushing off roof edges and lampposts, thunder rumbles and flashes of lighting light up the clouds dramatically."

Unfortunately, Game Informer's cover story doesn't include video of these weather systems in action, but with persistent effects, your imagination can run wild. Will streets flood? Will buildings and trees get knocked down? The possibilities are endless, and we're already eager to go storm chasing.
