Street Fighter Movie's Justin Wong Cameo: Director Explains Why

Ever wondered why Justin Wong shows up in the Street Fighter movie? You're not alone. Director Kitao Sakurai has revealed the reason behind the cameo, and it's all about speaking to the fighting game community in an authentic way.

If you've seen the film, you might have spotted Wong behind bars during the Blanka vs. Ryu fight, alongside fellow fighting game legends IFC Yipes and Maximilian Dood. They're all providing running commentary on the clash below. But it's Wong who gets the most notable moments—including a '37' tattoo that references the iconic 'Evo Moment 37', the nail-biting parry-fest between Wong and Daigo Umehara where Wong famously snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Sakurai explained that in the past, video game adaptations didn't always speak to fans or the community authentically. "These days, with Street Fighter and other films of this era, people are doing a better job of really involving the community and saying, 'Hey, we're making this movie for you,'" he said.

He added, "Street Fighter, a movie, needs to work for fans first. Obviously, there's going to be a broader audience beyond that, but that needs to be the entry point for the community." That philosophy led to the cameos, which are packed with nods to the competitive fighting game scene.

So if you're a longtime fan, you'll definitely appreciate the Easter eggs—especially the Evo Moment 37 reference. It's a love letter to the community, and Sakurai wants you to know it.

What do you think of the Justin Wong cameo? Will you be picking up the movie? Let us know!
