Ever talked yourself out of buying a game, then watched everyone else fall in love with it? That's exactly where Fire Emblem fans are sitting right now, because Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave launches tomorrow, September 17, exclusively on Switch 2, and the reviews are seriously glowing.
At the time of publication, the strategy RPG holds an 89 metascore on Metacritic, GameSpot's sister site. That's not just a good number, it's good enough to land at No. 13 on Metacritic's list of the best games of 2026. GameSpot's own review goes even further, calling Fortune's Weave "the new high point to beat for future entries." Not bad for a game some people had already decided to skip.
Here's the honest part: not every Fire Emblem fan has clicked with the series. Some players have a long history of buying well-reviewed entries, putting in maybe five hours, and then drifting off to something else. Fire Emblem: Three Houses on Switch in 2019 was one of those. Before that, Fire Emblem Awakening on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013 was a first real foray into the franchise, for anyone who doesn't count maining Marth in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Awakening is still sitting downloaded on a 3DS XL in a bedside table drawer, having been fired up multiple times only to fizzle out after a couple of hours. It's not that the turn-based action is disliked. It just never fully connected. And that's a lonely position to be in, because Awakening basically saved the entire series.
So Fortune's Weave was easy to ignore. Until now. The wave of praise has a way of making you feel like you're missing out on something special. Sure, Blasphemous is currently in progress, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake is waiting in the backlog after a sale pickup. But what if this is the Fire Emblem game that finally, finally resonates?
That's the thing about a new console generation. The Switch 2 exclusive status gives Fortune's Weave a fresh-start energy that's hard to resist, and an 89 metascore suggests it's not just hype. For lapsed fans, fence-sitters, and anyone who's ever bounced off a tactics game, tomorrow is the moment of truth.
Will you be picking up Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave on Switch 2, or are you waiting for the backlog to clear first? What do you think?
