Remember when a whole Zelda game fit on a 32MB cartridge? The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for Switch 2 is 27GB, which is over 800 times larger than the 1998 original. That's a huge jump, but in today's world of 200GB Call of Duty downloads, it's actually pretty reasonable.
A photo of the Japanese download card, shared by Twitter user Genki_JPN, confirms the 27GB file size. For context, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth on Switch 2 are 90.4GB and 91.5GB respectively, so the Zelda remake is positively svelte by comparison. It's a welcome surprise for anyone worried about storage space.
But here's the twist: at 27GB, Ocarina of Time remake is now the biggest mainline Zelda game of the Switch era. Breath of the Wild's Switch 2 Edition was the previous record holder at 24GB, while Tears of the Kingdom sits at 20GB. Link's Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom are both around 5GB. The only Zelda game larger overall is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment at 43.5GB.
So while it's not going to eat your entire SSD, it's still a chunky package—and that makes sense for a full remake of a beloved classic. The game also borrows one of Breath of the Wild's most immersive features, though we don't know exactly which one yet.
The remake is set to launch in 2026, and download cards are already appearing in Japanese stores. That means we're getting closer to seeing how this iconic adventure is being reimagined for a new generation.
For longtime fans, the file size is a nice reminder of how far we've come—and how much more game can fit into a modern release. It's not bloated, but it's certainly bigger than Link's original quest.
