NVIDIA DLSS 5 Coming to RTX 40 Cards, RTX 5070 Gets New Chip

NVIDIA confirms DLSS 5 will officially support RTX 40 series GPUs, while the RTX 5070 quietly swaps to a GB203 core and AMD's RDNA 5 targets up to 3.4GHz.

NVIDIA has finally confirmed what a lot of you RTX 40 series owners were hoping for: DLSS 5 is coming to last-gen cards. The company says its current focus is dialing in RTX 50 series performance, with an update planned for this fall. Once the 5-series is properly tuned, official support will extend to the 4-series.

"Our current focus is naturally the 5-series," an NVIDIA spokesperson explained. "As soon as we feel the 50-series is stable enough, we'll consider the 40-series." As for the RTX 30 and even RTX 20 cards that modders keep tinkering with, NVIDIA reckons their performance and real-world frame rates just can't keep up anymore. Sorry, folks.

Interestingly, the earlier unofficial crack didn't just push NVIDIA toward opening DLSS 5 up to RTX 40 cards. It also nudged the company to expand DLSS 5 beyond a simple on/off toggle. "For players, DLSS 5 is controlled by a single switch," the company said. "The finer art-style settings are for developers, including model selection, intensity, tone, masking, and custom per-pixel masks." Unreal Engine 5 already has a native plugin, and NVIDIA will offer a matching SDK so devs can apply DLSS 5 per-scene, per-object, or per-segment, or just hand the whole thing over to the built-in AI model.

On the hardware side, NVIDIA is reportedly prepping a new version of the GeForce RTX 5070 that swaps to a GB203 chip, with a matching driver rolling out soon. The original RTX 5070 uses a GB205 core, and the new GB203 die is physically larger. Like previous core swaps, though, the CUDA core count, memory specs, and power draw stay the same. Whether the architectural differences in TPC and SM layout affect thermals or real performance remains to be seen in hands-on testing.

Over on Team Red, well-known leaker Kepler_L2 shared on the Anandtech forums that AMD's internal docs point to RDNA 5 targeting clocks of 3.1 to 3.4GHz. That's a nice bump, but the real generational leap should come from IPC gains rather than frequency. As with RDNA 4, the highest clocks will likely land on smaller mid-range chips where thermals and electrical conditions are friendlier. RDNA 5 is shaping up to be a big spec jump that could push AMD back into the flagship market, though with the memory market still unstable, next-gen Radeon cards probably won't arrive until mid-to-late 2027.

In modding news, the community's DLSS multi-frame generation unlock for RTX 40 cards is back from the dead. The mod uses a memory patch to run NVIDIA's native DLSS-G multi-frame code on RTX 40 hardware, and it worked well in games like Cyberpunk 2077, Resident Evil 9, and Forza Motorsport 6, aside from the unavoidable latency bump. NVIDIA killed it via an OTA DLSS-G 310.9 update on September 3, but modders quickly shipped v0.4 to restore compatibility, fixing Ada frame-pacing issues and near-duplicate generated frames in 3X and 4X modes. Just remember it's still unofficial, so performance, latency, and stability may not match RTX 50 cards.
