Halo 3 on Your Browser? Xbox Labs Teases Big Retro Push

A new video from Xbox's CTO shows Halo 3 booting up in Microsoft Edge, hinting that Xbox Labs may bring classic games to browsers.

Halo 3 on Your Browser? Xbox Labs Teases Big Retro Push

Ever wondered what it'd be like to fire up Halo 3 right in your browser? You might not have to wonder much longer. Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet just dropped a video on X that ends with the iconic shooter booting up inside what sure looks like Microsoft Edge. And get this: there's even a prompt to play with mouse and keyboard. That's a pretty huge hint at what Xbox Labs might be cooking up.

The kicker? Neither Van Vliet nor Xbox CEO Asha Sharma (who he tagged in the post) actually mentions Halo 3 running in a browser. Instead, they're focused on the return of the Xbox Blades dashboard—that fan-favorite UI from roughly two decades ago. Van Vliet said he was working on "retro vibes," which fits perfectly with the Blades nostalgia. But come on, the Halo 3 footage is hard to ignore.

Xbox Labs was unveiled just last week, and while the company didn't say the exact words, it strongly implied a push into AI gaming. The past few months have already seen a wave of browser-based ports for classics like The Simpsons: Hit & Run and old-school Grand Theft Auto titles. There are even remixes mashing up Minecraft and Elden Ring. So Xbox Labs focusing on bringing past console libraries to browsers? That makes a ton of sense.

Imagine being able to play your Xbox 360 games right in a browser—especially if your saves could transfer over via the cloud. That would be a massive win for players. And Van Vliet's tease suggests you might even be able to pick your preferred 360 dashboard to boot up those titles. Talk about a nostalgia overload.

Xbox isn't the only big name dipping its toes into this space. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney says the Fortnite developer is focused on "maximum AI acceleration." The Unreal Engine maker even vibe-coded a new Epic Games Launcher earlier this month—though it came with all sorts of problems. So there's clearly a lot of experimentation happening across the industry.

For now, all we have is a tantalizing video and a whole lot of speculation. But if Xbox can pull off browser-based Halo 3 with cloud saves and classic dashboards, it could be a game-changer for how we access old favorites. Will you be picking this up if it becomes a reality? What do you think?
