Japanese Blogger: Kojima Is Playing the Victim While Sony Plays the Long Game

A Japanese gaming blogger argues Sony's split with Kojima Productions isn't cold-hearted betrayal — it's a decade-long investment review, and Kojima's PR narrative is doing the heavy lifting.

Sony and Kojima Productions have officially called it quits on Physint, the spy thriller that was supposed to be a match made in heaven. Almost immediately, Kojima Productions announced it's expanding its partnership with Xbox — meaning the project Kojima himself has called his life's work is now moving forward under Microsoft's banner.

Naturally, fans have been quick to paint Sony as the villain here. Poor Kojima, abandoned by the very company that took him in after Konami. But one Japanese gaming blogger, ろうりん, isn't buying that narrative — and their breakdown of the situation is worth a read.

According to the blogger, Sony wasn't cold to Kojima at all. After his split from Konami, SIE poured serious money into the newly independent studio — funding its creation, providing office space, an engine, and a full suite of development resources. And they did this for a full decade without ever forcing Kojima Productions to become a subsidiary. Compared to what happened to Nagoshi Toshihiro, that's a pretty generous deal.

The blogger's theory? Sony simply hit the ten-year mark and did what any company does: reviewed the investment. Death Stranding was a commercial success, sure, but it never grew into a world-class IP. The sequel's sales dipped, and the IP's value has likely hit Sony's ceiling. Convincing them that Physint could become a top-tier global franchise over the next decade was always going to be a tough sell.

For Xbox, the math looks completely different. Kojima Productions already has ten years of development experience under its belt, and the Death Stranding series has earned global critical acclaim. Microsoft doesn't need to eat the startup costs this time — they just need a game on par with the first Death Stranding to turn a profit. Betting on that long-term potential is a risk they're willing to take.

The blogger does admit one thing: Kojima's way of talking about all this makes Sony look pretty heartless. But that's less about Sony and more about Kojima's signature PR style — crafting the narrative of an abandoned genius who overcomes adversity to deliver his magnum opus, Physint. The blogger gets why Kojima framed it that way, but still feels Sony's decision comes off as a bit ice-cold.

What do you think — is Sony being pragmatic, or did they do Kojima dirty? Drop your take in the comments.
