Do You Ever Log Into Old MMOs Just to 'Take Their Temperature'?

Ever find yourself logging into an old MMO you haven't touched in years, just to see if it still feels like home? You're not alone. On a recent podcast, Justin and I realized we both do this thing in MMOs that we weren't even sure counts as "playing." We occasionally log into MMORPGs we used to play a lot and—as Justin put it—take their temperature. See how they're doing.

It's a weird habit, right? You're not really committing to a comeback. You're not grinding levels or chasing endgame gear. You're just... checking in. Maybe you wander around a starting zone for a few minutes, peek at the auction house, or see if your old guild still has anyone online. It's like visiting your childhood home and peering through the windows to see if the furniture's still arranged the same way.

For me, it's usually a mix of nostalgia and curiosity. I want to know if the game still has that spark, or if it's become a ghost town. Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised—there's a vibrant community, new content, and I can feel the pull again. Other times, it's a sad reminder that time moves on, and so do we.

But here's the thing: we weren't sure whether to count this as "playing." It's not really playing in the traditional sense, is it? You're not investing hours. You're not progressing. You're just... observing. Yet it feels like something more than just logging in. It's a ritual, a way of reconnecting with a past version of yourself.

Maybe it's about measuring how we've changed, too. The games stay the same (mostly), but we don't. The things that used to hook us might not anymore. Or maybe they still do, and that's a whole other can of worms. Either way, taking that temperature can be a surprisingly emotional experience.
