Ever feel like finding a needle in a haystack? Well, now you can do it virtually—and you're not alone. Steam is currently being overrun by a bizarre new genre: needle-in-a-haystack games. It all started with Needle In A Haystack Simulator, a game about, you guessed it, sifting through hay to find a needle. But here's the kicker: a playtest in August attracted around 23,000 players. That's right, 23,000 people willingly signed up to do virtual busywork.
Why is this a thing? Because games about meaningless, repetitive labour are apparently all the rage. Needle In A Haystack Simulator mixes sorting and incremental mechanics: you manually sift through hay, find items to sell, and invest in better hay-sorting tech. It sounds tedious, but there's clearly a market for it. The game is set for release in Q4 2026, but it's already spawned a slew of copycats.
At least two haystack games have beaten it to launch. Needle In A Haystack - A Time For Goats came out on September 19 and sold a thousand copies by September 26, according to developer Red Key Games. The studio even addressed the sudden influx of hay games, stating it was a "crazy coincidence" and not copying ideas—they were months into production before the trend exploded. Then, just yesterday, they added a bizarre first-person shooter endgame, presumably to stand out. One user, djcassar, wasn't impressed: "Dude, what are you thinking?? It is a completely different play style to what people are buying the game are intending to experience. Get rid of it!"
The other released haystack game, A Needle In A Haystack: Sorting Game, launched on September 25 and, based on Steam reviews, is a substandard piece of software. But the competition is far from over. Needle In A Haystack (yes, another one) releases in full on September 30, and its demo apparently attracted 20,000 players. Story of The Needle In a Haystack is set for November 28 with a live demo. And the list goes on: Needle in a Haystack, A Needle In a Haystack, CO-OP Needle Hunt, Find The Needle, Needle Hunt, Needle in a Million Haystacks, Hay! One Billion!, and more.
The creator of Needle In A Haystack Simulator, known as Nas, even issued a mock apology on X: "As the dev of the one that went viral, i would like to formally apologise to the steam storefront." When someone offered sympathy, Nas replied: "Don't feel bad, it's the ultimate slop game. I have no complaints." They've even used the game to spoof Wolverine. But the copycats? They're likely in it for the cash. Joke games spawning unjokeful clones isn't new—A Game About Digging A Hole and Banana had similar fates—but the haystack trend fits perfectly with Steam's slop boom.
So, what's the takeaway? If you're an indie dev with a weird game, be careful: if it goes viral, the churn industry will notice. And for players, well, there are over 100,000 games on Steam. Maybe you can find something better than virtual hay sifting. But hey, if you're into dissociating from reality, who are we to judge? Will you be picking up one of these haystack games?
