ShinyHunters Hackers Hit FBI After Rockstar Data Leak

Remember ShinyHunters? The hacker crew that made headlines back in April after swiping a ton of Rockstar's financial data, demanding a ransom, and then dumping it all online when nobody paid up. Yeah, they're back. And this time, they've set their sights on the FBI.

According to a report from Polygon, the group has claimed a new victim: the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. If that sounds bold, it's because it is. These are the same folks who allegedly breached institutions like Harvard University before turning their attention to bigger, more high-profile targets.

Here's the twist. About a month before ShinyHunters went after Rockstar, the FBI itself put out a public advisory warning about the group. The bureau described their tactics as harassment-heavy, claiming they send threatening texts and make threatening calls to victims and even their families. In some cases, they've reportedly resorted to "SWATing" — that's when someone makes a fake emergency call to send a heavily armed police tactical team to an unsuspecting person's home.

Apparently, ShinyHunters didn't take too kindly to being called out. The report says the group decided to retaliate by stealing information belonging to current and former FBI employees. The data allegedly came from an online recruitment portal, which means they also grabbed details on people who had simply applied for jobs at the bureau. That's a whole lot of people who never signed up for this mess.

The leaked info is said to include home addresses, phone numbers, names, spouse information, some medical details, and other personal data — potentially affecting tens of thousands of individuals. ShinyHunters has issued an ultimatum: if the FBI doesn't revise or remove that earlier security advisory within a week, they'll publish the entire batch of data for the world to see.

The FBI has acknowledged the breach and says it's still assessing the situation. A spokesperson told The New York Times that it's not yet clear whether the vulnerability was in a third-party system or within the bureau's own infrastructure. "We are actively and fully investigating this matter and working closely with the third-party service provider that supports FBIJobs.gov to mitigate and eliminate any potential risk," the spokesperson said.

So yeah, the same crew that embarrassed Rockstar is now trading blows with the FBI.
