Diablo: Unbound Board Game Is a 'Dungeon Battler,' Not a Crawler

Glass Cannon Unplugged's Diablo: Unbound is a 'dungeon battler' with four classes, modular dungeons, and a 2027 Gamefound campaign. Playable at SPIEL Essen this October.

Diablo: Unbound Board Game Is a 'Dungeon Battler,' Not a Crawler

Ever wanted to battle your way through the darkest corners of Sanctuary, not just crawl? That's exactly what Glass Cannon Unplugged is promising with Diablo: Unbound, the official Diablo board game—and they're calling it a 'dungeon battler,' not a dungeon crawler.

So what does that mean? According to CEO Jakub Wiśniewski, you get 'the high-stakes showdowns of a boss battler—and hordes of monsters that never let up.' But here's the twist: 'You don't crawl through dungeons. You battle your way down.' Sounds grim, right? Perfect for Diablo.

In Diablo: Unbound, you'll pick a dungeon in the darkest corner of Sanctuary, then fill it with monsters and bosses represented by gnarly miniatures. You'll grind through them using one of four iconic classes: Barbarian, Paladin, Sorceress, or Rogue. Each has distinct playstyles, extensive customization, and unique skill trees, so combined with what Glass Cannon calls a 'highly modular structure,' the game should be super replayable.

But it's not just mindless hack-and-slash. Each boss has unique attacks, a lair, and multiple combat stages. You can earn loot via chests, side quests, defeating Elite enemies, or kill streaks—adding a push-your-luck element that tempts you to do just a little more. And before each encounter, a 'Town Phase' lets you improve skills or respecialize your build.

The game features three acts with three dungeon levels each, and every dungeon takes up to 90 minutes. But the fun doesn't end when you finish—there's an endgame 'Torment' mode where you take on bosses in their ultimate form. So you won't have to down tools like in some RPG board games.

Now, the bad news: the crowdfunding campaign isn't due to go live on Gamefound until early 2027. But you can play it much earlier—specifically at this year's SPIEL Essen between October 22-25. If you can't make it, you can check out the Gamefound pre-launch page.

Glass Cannon Unplugged is no stranger to video game adaptations—they made the Apex Legends board game (which impressed us) and a Diablo tabletop RPG, so they know the world well. Will you be battling your way down? Let us know!
