Got a dusty old mining card lying around? Turns out it might have a second life as a gaming rig. Developers over on GitHub have successfully adapted AMD's BC-250 mining board to run FSR 4, and the results are pretty wild.
For those out of the loop, the AMD BC-250 isn't your average consumer GPU. Back in 2022, AMD built these boards for ASRock's 12-board systems using PlayStation 5 chips that didn't quite meet console quality standards. Instead of gaming, they were destined for crypto mining.
Fast forward to today, and the mining boom is long gone. That means piles of BC-250 boards are flooding the second-hand market, going for around $170 a pop. The catch? AMD never offered official software support, so anyone picking one up has to figure out cooling, power, and a working OS all on their own.
But here's where it gets interesting. These cards pack the same custom silicon you'd find in a PS5. By updating the firmware, devs have unlocked previously disabled compute units, bringing the chip up to its full 8-core Zen 2 CPU and 40 RDNA 2 compute units.
And after all that modding, this aging architecture can actually run the latest FSR 4 tech. The community's v4.0.0-rc9 driver massively cuts down rendering load. At 1440p, FSR's absolute processing time dropped from 11.51 milliseconds to just 5.92 milliseconds—a reduction of over 50%.
Sure, we've seen mining cards turned into gaming cards before, but the BC-250 project is on another level. The open-source community didn't just tweak image upscaling; they've also handled memory configuration, low-level drivers, and even custom OS work.
That said, this is still a DIY-heavy solution. Testing has only been done on Linux, and the developers recommend treating 1440p as the realistic performance ceiling. It's not plug-and-play, but for tinkerers, it's a fascinating way to rescue hardware from the scrap heap.
