Moss Developer Polyarc Games Shuts Down After 12 Years

Polyarc Games, the Seattle-based studio behind the Moss VR series, is closing after 12 years. Its final release, Moss: The Forgotten Relic, may be its last hurrah.

Did you ever guide Quill through those gorgeous Moss dioramas and wish the studio behind them would stick around forever? Sadly, that chapter is closing. Polyarc Games, the Seattle-based developer best known for the Moss VR series, has announced it's shutting its doors after 12 years.

The news came straight from the studio's own LinkedIn page, where the team shared a farewell message and confirmed they're winding down active development. "Today is the end of an era for Polyarc," the studio wrote in its goodbye. That's a heavy sentence for anyone who's been following the studio's journey since it first appeared on the scene.

If you're a VR fan, you know Polyarc's name carries weight. Moss put you in control of a tiny mouse hero named Quill, blending puzzle-platforming with a storybook charm that made the headset feel magical. It became one of the standout titles for PlayStation VR and later found homes on other platforms, earning the studio a loyal following.

Now the studio's final release, Moss: The Forgotten Relic, may well stand as Polyarc's last hurrah. There's something bittersweet about a team going out on a new entry in the very series that defined them, especially when that series helped prove VR could deliver real emotional storytelling, not just tech demos.

Twelve years is a long run for any independent studio, and Polyarc spent that time carving out a niche in a notoriously tough market. VR development is expensive, risky, and constantly shifting as hardware evolves, so lasting over a decade is no small feat. The fact that they're winding down rather than announcing a new project says a lot about the current climate for VR-focused teams.

For players, the immediate takeaway is simple: if you've been meaning to check out Moss or its sequel, now's the time. And if you already own them, maybe give Quill one more adventure in honor of the folks who built her world. The studio didn't share specifics about what comes next for the team, so we'll have to wait and see where these developers land.

It's always rough to watch a talented studio close up shop, especially one that delivered something genuinely special in a niche space. Polyarc's legacy lives on in every player who got misty-eyed watching Quill wave back at them through the headset.

What's your favorite Moss memory? Will you be revisiting Quill's adventures now that the studio is saying goodbye?
