Did you ever think you'd see a Final Fantasy 7 remake launch on everything at once? Well, get ready, because Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is doing exactly that.
According to director Naoki Hamaguchi, the decision to ditch PS5 exclusivity was simply inevitable. In an interview with Edge Magazine issue #429, he explained that it's all about responding to how we play games today. "An inevitable outcome of the changing environment surrounding today's players," he said. Basically, we're no longer tied to one console—we game on TVs, desktops, and handhelds, and Square Enix knows it.
This is a big shift for the remake trilogy. Both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth launched as PlayStation exclusives, and it took years for them to hit PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. But Revelation will be available for everyone on day one, no waiting required. That's a win for fans who don't want to buy a specific console just to keep up with Cloud and the gang.
Hamaguchi also shared his philosophy on modern triple-A development. He believes the focus shouldn't be on how high-performance the hardware is, but on how widely you can deliver the same core experience across different environments. In other words, whether you're rocking a top-of-the-line PC or a handheld device, you should still get the essence of the game. That's the future, and Square Enix is embracing it.
This move aligns with Square Enix's previously announced intention to "aggressively" pursue a multiplatform strategy, which they revealed back in 2024. While the publisher has never been strictly exclusive to one platform—their allegiances shifted between Nintendo and Sony in the '90s—they've been putting games on all major platforms for years now. It's a clear win for players, unless you're a hardcore console warrior.
In related news, Hamaguchi also mentioned that he pushed Square Enix for a physical version of the JRPG, but he acknowledges that physical media will eventually be "essentially disc-less." So enjoy those discs while they last, collectors.
