Ever dreamed of owning a full-size PlayStation that you built yourself? The Lego PlayStation (set #72306) makes that dream a brick-built reality, and it's one of the most impressive retro gaming tributes we've ever seen.
Unlike the smaller Lego Sega Genesis Console (40926), this PlayStation is recreated at an almost perfect 1:1 scale with the original. That means it's a hefty display piece: 1,911 pieces, measuring 2.5 inches tall, 10.5 inches wide, and 7.5 inches deep. It's aimed at ages 18+ and takes around 9 to 10 hours to build. No minifigures are included, but that's fine because the console itself is the star.
The first thing you'll notice is just how much it looks like the real thing. The unique shape and curved surfaces are captured beautifully, and the DualShock controller is perfectly recreated, right down to the iconic face buttons and angled hand grips. It's a premium set at $179.99 / £139.99, but the attention to detail justifies the price.
Building it is far from boring. Early on, you construct a large PS logo with the correct color scheme, set atop a green layer with gold and silver pieces that mimic a circuit board. Then there are two internal dioramas representing Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. These pack in incredible detail—the Gran Turismo cars are actually minifig roller skates with colored tiles, and the Ape Escape character has an interchangeable red or blue helmet, with a storage box for the spare. There are 15 small stickers in these areas, but everything else, including external buttons and logos, is printed.
The dioramas slot inside the console but can be slid out for display. The real showstopper, though, is the working buttons. Press Power and a luminous rod pops up to simulate the LED; press Open and the disc tray lid swings up smoothly, then clicks shut just like the original. It's a wow factor that impresses everyone who sees it. Just be gentle—pressing too hard can jam the buttons, though it's easy to fix.
Everything matches the original: rear ports (AC In, AV Multi Out, Serial I/O), side ridges, front controller ports that the DualShock actually plugs into, and even the four rubber feet on the bottom. The instructions are clear, with top-down views for tricky sections. The build experience is a joy, though some parts are fiddly.
If you're a retro gamer with a budget for it, this set is a must-have. It's an incredibly detailed tribute to the console that changed gaming forever. Will you be adding it to your collection? Let us know in the comments!
