Ever wonder what happens when a live-service game becomes a massive hit? For Helldivers 2, the answer apparently isn't "rush out a sequel." Arrowhead's chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt told Rock Paper Shotgun that a Helldivers 3 would reset "everything" and force players to "start over" — and he's not keen on asking the community to do that.
Instead, the studio plans to keep the momentum going with the game you already know and love, by continuing to offer new content for Helldivers 2. It's a pretty refreshing stance in an industry where sequels often feel automatic after a big success.
Pilestedt didn't mince words about how some studios treat their audiences. "Some studios can treat players like a short-term cash grab," he said. "We see players as the actual engine of the game: they're the ones bringing in friends, making memes, and keeping the game alive. When you have an active community doing that, you don't need a sequel." That's a direct vote of confidence in you and everyone else still dropping into missions.
He also had some blunt thoughts on the wider industry, saying it's "panicking" because "the old live-service tricks don't work anymore." That logic would apply to a hypothetical Helldivers 3 too — a sequel would have to be highly differentiated to justify itself. "The biggest competitor to a Helldivers 3 would be Helldivers 2," he explained. "It only makes sense to make a distinct sequel if it's so different that both games can exist side by side. For now, making Helldivers 2 better every day makes way more sense than throwing away its momentum."
So where's the studio's focus right now? Pilestedt said 95% of Arrowhead is working on Helldivers 2, with only a small team assigned to whatever the team is making next. That's a whole lot of firepower aimed at improving the game you're already playing rather than starting from scratch.
And if you're hungry for Helldivers beyond the game itself, there's other news: a Helldivers movie is now in the works. The very large Alan Ritchson is replacing the very large Aqua(man) Jason Momoa as the film's lead. No word yet on how that big-screen version will handle the chaos of Super Earth, but it's one more sign the franchise isn't going quiet.
For now, the takeaway is simple: don't hold your breath for a third game. Arrowhead would rather keep building on what's already working — and given how much the community has fueled Helldivers 2, that might be the smartest move of all. What do you think — would you rather see a fresh sequel or more content for the game you're already playing?
