Ever stumbled on a Shum arcade cabinet in Control Resonant and wondered why it won't turn on? You're not alone. These retro machines are scattered across Manhattan as recurring side quests and unlockable minigames, and there are eight of them in total. Each one whisks Dylan into a challenge where you're chasing a high score for rewards.
Here's the catch: most of them won't activate until you raise the Zone Level enough. So if a cabinet seems dead, you probably just need to level up the area first. With that in mind, let's walk through every Shum machine, where it hides, and what it takes to unlock it.
First up, Defend: Downtown. You'll need Zone Level 6 to switch it on. Your job is to protect three crates from enemies trying to smash them, keeping damage low while dropping foes fast. Hit at least 80,953 points and an Outfit is yours. Then there's Parkour: Central, which unlocks at Zone Level 4. It's a parkour course around the outside of the Patterned Factory, packed with threats. Every hit you take adds three seconds to your timer, so stay clean and finish in at least 01:18 for an Outfit.
Next, the Entropy machines. Entropy: West Incursion Zone unlocks at Zone Level 3 and throws waves of enemies at you while the playable area occasionally shrinks. Score at least 42,503 points for an Outfit. Entropy: Evacuation Zone needs Zone Level 6 plus the "Evacuation Procedures" story mission completed, and the target is 25,322 points. Entropy: The Park also wants Zone Level 4, but you'll need all three "Carbon Copy" side quests done first. The score to beat there is 26,032 points.
Moving on, Clocked: Underpass unlocks at Zone Level 5. You have to wipe out every wave before the timer runs out, and each kill buys you more time. Finish in at least 00:22 for an Outfit. Parkour: Unknown also unlocks at Zone Level 5, set on an Unknown island with multiple threats. Same deal: damage adds three seconds, so complete it in at least 01:14 for an Outfit. Finally, Conquest: Retro is a special one. It unlocks in Dylan's apartment after you finish the main story. You'll dive back into the Retro video game recreation of Ordinary and defeat all the enemies around town. Score at least 110,000 points for an Outfit.
As for rewards, Shum machines scale based on your leaderboard position and also grant Zone Level experience tied to your score. Fifth and fourth place give nothing. Third place nets you an Outfit or customization unlock. Second place gives a Power Upgrade Point. First place awards a Control Resonant Reset Item. These stack, so a first-place finish also gives you the second and third-place prizes. But since these arcades are late to endgame content, most players will already have plenty of Power and Reset Items, so you're likely chasing the Outfit and clothing.
One thing the game doesn't spell out: these Shum machines are designed as late-game challenges, and you'll struggle if you tackle them too early. That doesn't mean you're doing something wrong, they're just scaled for high-level endgame players. I'd recommend hitting at least level 8 before trying, or tweaking the accessibility options if you want the rewards early. So, which Shum machine are you hunting down first?
