Metroid Ravenous Brings Samus Back to 2D on Switch 2

Ready for Samus to go back to her 2D roots? Nintendo just dropped a surprise during its latest Direct: Metroid Ravenous, a brand-new 2D adventure coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2. And yes, it's bringing back something fans have been buzzing about—Samus talks again.

The debut trailer gave us a lot to unpack. We got our first look at a mysterious new group of villains, plus a peek at some of the new locales Samus will be exploring as she hunts them down. But the biggest tease? A fresh mechanic where Samus "feeds" on enemies to gain extra powers. How exactly that works is still a mystery, but it's a wild twist for the series.

Speaking of twists, Samus is suiting up in something new: green armor with a glowing energy sword. Nintendo later confirmed this is called the Metroid Suit. If you're a collector, there's an Amiibo figure of the suit included in the Collector's Edition. That's a nice bonus for fans who want the full package.

For longtime fans, this is a big deal. Ravenous marks Samus's return to 2D for the first time since 2021's Metroid Dread. Her most recent outing, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, finally launched in December after nearly a decade in development. So getting another 2D Metroid so soon? That's a treat.

The Direct wasn't just about Metroid, though. Nintendo also revealed Kirby and the World Beyond, a new open-world adventure starring everyone's favorite pink puffball. We also got new editions of Pikmin 4 and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. Plus, third-party announcements included Persona 6 coming to Switch 2, a Switch 2 edition of Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core Reunion, and a port of Monster Hunter Wilds. That's a stacked lineup.

But let's be real—Metroid Ravenous is the headline here. The return of 2D Samus, a creepy new feeding mechanic, and a talking protagonist? It's a lot to process. The game launches January 28, 2027, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. So mark your calendars.
