PSA FedEx Heist: Nearly $1 Million in Trading Cards Stolen

What would you do if your prized trading cards vanished from a FedEx truck? That nightmare became real for collectors after a heist outside PSA's Santa Ana headquarters.

In mid-October, collectors received emails from PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) saying their shipments had been burglarized. One collector, known as SKY-B, claimed over $100,000 worth of cards he'd hand-delivered at a card show were now lost. "I have an awful feeling PSA is going to be extremely unfair on what the values of these cards are," he tweeted.

PSA responded quickly, promising to refund affected customers based on fair market value up to the Maximum Insured Value (MIV) they selected. They also deactivated the certificates of the stolen items and said they're cooperating with FedEx and law enforcement.

The Santa Ana Police Department then dropped a bombshell: the theft, which occurred on October 13, involved two pallets holding about 100 packages, plus a third pallet with around 50 packages. The first two pallets alone are valued at approximately $963,000. No dollar amount has been calculated for the third pallet yet, but it's looking like the total damage will exceed $1 million.

According to police, the FedEx driver left the truck parked nearby for 60 to 90 minutes. Thieves broke the lock and made off with the packages. The pallets contained various trading cards, including sports cards and Pokémon cards. "The exact value of the stolen items has not yet been determined, pending further investigation," SAPD told The Athletic. "The investigation remains ongoing."

FedEx stated that "the security of our customers' shipments is a top priority" and that they're working with local law enforcement. PSA emphasized their commitment to collectors: "We understand the impact this has on collectors involved, many of whom see these cards as far more than a financial asset. Our team is focused on supporting them."

For now, collectors are left hoping for fair compensation and answers. What do you think about this shocking heist? Will you be more cautious when shipping your valuable cards?
