Sony might be digging through its vault of classic PlayStation icons, and one beloved monkey-chasing series could be making a comeback.
According to well-known and generally reliable insider NateTheHate, Sony is planning to revive a batch of classic older IPs, and the PS staple Ape Escape could be one of them. The claim popped up on ResetEra, where a user asked NateTheHate whether he'd heard anything about recent rumors that Ape Escape is set to return.
His response was careful but telling: "As I said a while back, Sony is considering reviving some long-dormant game series." That lines up with the idea that the company is at least exploring what its back catalog could look like in 2024 and beyond.
Naturally, speculation immediately turned to who would actually make a new Ape Escape. One player suggested Team Asobi — the studio behind Astro Bot — might take the reins. NateTheHate shut that down outright, so if a new Ape Escape really is happening, it won't be coming from the Astro Bot team.
Why give this any weight at all? NateTheHate has built a reputation for being cautious and remarkably accurate, and he typically doesn't chime in on things he doesn't actually know about. When he does speak, the gaming community tends to listen.
That said, this is still just one insider's claim. Sony hasn't confirmed anything, and there's no official announcement, no trailer, no release window — nothing. So it's best to keep expectations in check until we hear something concrete.
Still, the idea of Ape Escape swinging back onto modern PlayStation hardware is enough to get longtime fans excited. The series has been quiet for years, and a proper revival could introduce Spike and his net-slinging antics to a whole new generation of players.
Would you be down for a new Ape Escape, or is there another dormant PlayStation franchise you'd rather see Sony bring back first? Let us know in the comments.
