Ever wondered what it'd be like to play World of Warcraft from your couch, controller in hand? At BlizzCon 2026, I got to try exactly that with WoW: Forever, and let me tell you—it's a game-changer.
WoW: Forever is Blizzard's next evolution of WoW Classic, bringing significant changes and new content. The demo I played let me explore the new Skyborne elf starting zone using a controller, and despite being labeled "alpha," it worked surprisingly well. For Blizzard's MMORPG, this is a first. Sure, the game has had barebones controller support for years, but a truly mouse-and-keyboard-free experience has relied on player-made add-ons like ConsolePort. Now, Blizzard is building it in officially.
As someone who's played WoW on mouse and keyboard for 22 years, I was shocked at how natural the controller felt. Shoulder buttons cycle through friendly or enemy NPCs. Face buttons handle interacting and jumping. Abilities are bound to the d-pad and face buttons, with extra keybinds via triggers—each trigger gives you eight more, and holding both adds another eight. Combined with the d-pad, that's 28 buttons at your fingertips.
That sounds like plenty, but in WoW Classic or Forever, it might not be enough. Spellcasters especially have a comical number of skills, thanks to multiple spell ranks that clutter action bars. Outside of combat and chatting with NPCs, things get more cumbersome. Opening your inventory on keyboard is just hitting "b" and clicking. On controller, you bring up a radial menu, slide to inventory, then cycle through dozens of items. It's slower and less straightforward than ideal.
So, full controller support might suit some classes and playstyles better than others. Modern "retail" WoW, currently in its Midnight expansion, would arguably benefit even more—fewer buttons, less inventory management. I could see this setup working wonders for running delves on your couch or casually knocking out world quests.
Blizzard's full plans aren't clear yet. The demo was alpha, but the studio announced at the show that Forever will be fully playable with a controller at launch on November 4. No word on whether it'll come to retail, though given how much DNA the versions share, it seems likely. GameSpot reached out to Blizzard for comment and will update if they hear back.
The big question: does this pave the way for a console version? Blizzard is owned by Microsoft, which owns Xbox. Fans have speculated that Midnight's add-on restrictions and last year's ability pruning were setting the table for consoles. Blizzard said last year that if a console version were happening, they'd tell fans. Handheld PCs are also booming, and full controller support would open the door for official play on those devices.
Regardless of consoles, a fully functioning controller option feels long overdue for accessibility on PC. Seeing Blizzard finally deliver one is nothing but good news. From my time with it, it's simple, intuitive, and sometimes even easier than mouse and keyboard—though inventory management still leaves something to be desired. Whatever Blizzard's full plans are, it can't come soon enough.
What do you think? Will you be trying WoW: Forever with a controller?
