Diablo 4 Expansions Are Done, Blizzard Focuses on Diablo 5

Did you see this coming? Diablo 4 is officially done with expansions. At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard revealed that Diablo 5 is on the way, and the team is shifting its focus there. In an interview with PC Gamer, game director Brent Gibson said there are no plans for additional Diablo 4 expansions. Instead, the team is "focused on seasons [for Diablo 4] and getting to Diablo 5."

So what does that mean for Sanctuary? Diablo 5 is slated for Spring 2029, set 100 years after Diablo 4 in a world where the Lord of Terror reigns supreme. Gibson explained that Blizzard told the "story of Hatred" culminating in the Lord of Hatred expansion, and now it's moving forward to tell the "story of Terror." That's a pretty big shift, but it doesn't mean Diablo 4 is being abandoned. Support will continue through seasons, which will lead into the events of Diablo 5—even though the sequel takes place a century later. That gives Blizzard room to set up the story, though Gibson said they don't "have a perfect picture" of where it will all go because they want to see how fans "react season to season."

It's worth noting that Diablo 4 is the only Diablo game to have received more than one expansion. Before release, Blizzard said it would receive "annual" expansions, but that quickly didn't come to pass. The Lord of Hatred expansion launched in April of this year, about a year and a half after the first expansion, Vessel of Hatred. So while the expansion era is over, the seasonal era is very much alive.

And there's more content on the way. The Amazon will join Diablo 4 as a standalone DLC next year—not a new expansion, but a new class to play. Plus, Diablo 4 Season 15, Hell's Legacy, begins September 15. It will see the return of iconic locations, items, and even Deckard Cain. The Horadrim will task players with battling memories of the Prime Evils from previous Diablo games, including Diablo himself. That sounds like a nostalgic trip for longtime fans.

So while we won't get another big expansion, Diablo 4 still has plenty going on. Seasons will continue to evolve, and the new class and Season 15 should keep things fresh. Meanwhile, Diablo 5 is looming on the horizon, promising a world ruled by Terror. It's an exciting time to be a Diablo fan, even if the expansion chapter is closing.
