Indie RPG Queen's Domain Hits Steam & Consoles Oct 30

Ever wonder where the Soulslike genre really began? Long before Dark Souls, FromSoftware was crafting the cult classic King's Field series in the '90s. Now, that same dark, punishing spirit is back in a new indie tribute called Queen's Domain, and it's launching just in time for Halloween.

Mark your calendar: Queen's Domain arrives on October 30 for Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2. That's right, it's hitting all major platforms on the same day. And if you're a fan of old-school RPGs, this one should be on your radar. The game first caught our eye last year when it hit 50,000 Steam wishlists in a week. Now that number has skyrocketed to over 180,000, so clearly we're not the only ones hyped.

So what exactly is Queen's Domain? It's a first-person RPG with a "retro-fantasy" aesthetic. Don't expect literal PS1 graphics here—the environments are way too dense and detailed for that. But the dithering effects, sparse UI, and chunky creature designs absolutely nail that vintage vibe. The lonely atmosphere of King's Field is fully intact, too. You wash ashore on a mysterious island with almost no direction, and it's up to you to figure out your own path through an interconnected world. You'll build up your arsenal of weapons and powers as you go. In other words, it's catnip for anyone who loves punishing RPGs. And yes, there are skeletons. Because of course there are.

The whole "King's Field but from an indie dev" concept has become a bit of a cottage industry lately. We covered Lunacid years ago, and it's enjoyed very positive reviews since 2023.
