The Last of Us Season 3 Likely the Final Chapter, HBO Says Again

Did you think The Last of Us would keep going forever? Well, HBO is once again hinting that the end is near. Network boss Casey Bloys has said—again—that the upcoming third season is probably the last one. He told Deadline that Season 3 is coming in 2027, though we still don't know exactly when in the year. When asked if he still believes it's the final season, Bloys said he thinks showrunner Craig Mazin "has planned it as the final season."

This isn't the first time Bloys has teased the show's conclusion. Back in January, he was asked the same question and said, "It certainly seems that way." But he also admitted that the final call rests with Mazin. So while HBO might be ready to say goodbye, it's ultimately Craig's decision.

Before all this, Mazin had said that a fourth season was essential to properly wrap up the story. But now Bloys is suggesting the show could end with Season 3—and it might be a longer season to fit everything in. "Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn't been decided yet, and I'm following Craig's lead on that," Bloys explained in 2025. So there's still a bit of uncertainty about the exact shape of the ending.

One big change for Season 3: Naughty Dog, the studio behind the games, is not involved creatively this time around. And Neil Druckmann, a key creative force, has stepped away from his writing and directing duties. Fans have been speculating about what this means, but Druckmann said he left the show to focus on Naughty Dog's games. He's currently directing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and if the rumored The Last of Us 3 is in development, he's likely involved in that too.

So what does this all mean for you? If you're a fan of the show, you might want to prepare for the end. Season 3 could be the last hurrah, and with Druckmann's departure, the series is entering new territory. But hey, at least we know it's coming in 2027. That gives us plenty of time to rewatch the first two seasons and theorize about how it'll all go down.

What do you think? Are you ready for The Last of Us to end with Season 3, or were you hoping for more? Let us know in the comments!
