Remember when PlayStation felt like it actually cared about Chinese-speaking players? Sony's HK$388 price for God of War: Laufey has a lot of folks wondering if that feeling is finally coming back.

Let's rewind. Back in 2003, the PS2 was already dominating the globe, and Sony set its sights on mainland China. At a time when pirated consoles and bootleg discs were everywhere, launching an official PlayStation there was a big deal. On November 28, 2003, Sony announced a mainland China PS2, complete with official games like Gran Turismo. It hit shelves in January 2004, marking the start of PlayStation's legitimate relationship with Chinese players.

Things didn't pan out for the China PS2, and the PS3 and PSP never got official mainland releases. But one thing never changed: Sony didn't ignore Chinese-speaking players. The PS3 had a Chinese system language, and Sony's SIE localization team churned out Chinese versions of major titles, with Final Fantasy XIII standing out as a landmark. Back then, that attitude set Sony apart from other console makers.

Fast forward to 2017. Fans were hyped for Nintendo's Switch and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but Chinese players got a cold shower: no Chinese support for the system or the game. Meanwhile, Sony's China PS4 was already out, and third-party titles like Sword Art Online: Lost Song, Toukiden: Kiwami, Final Fantasy X HD, and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC Evolution all got official Chinese releases through SIE. The Hong Kong PSN store was constantly running promos, discount codes, and membership perks under HK$200. It was a golden era for Chinese PS fans.

Then the PS5 generation rolled in, and Sony started feeling like a different company. The new PS Plus tiers launched in Asia first, but a forced upgrade pricing controversy blew up. SIE later offered HK$80.8 in compensation, but many Chinese PS players felt like guinea pigs. From Andrew House to Hiroshi Kawano to Jim Ryan and the dual-CEO era, most news coming out of PlayStation for Chinese fans was bad. But with current SIE president Hideaki Nishino taking the reins, things seem to be turning around.

That 2025 State of Play in Japan was Sony's first Asia-facing showcase since 2018's PlayStation LineUp, and fans had waited a long time for it. Now, God of War: Laufey's HK$388 price tag looks like proof that change is happening. PlayStation is stepping back onto the stage for Asian players, living up to its old motto: everything for the players.

So what do you think? Is Sony's shift just a short-term marketing play, or is it truly starting to value Chinese-speaking players again? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
