Ever found yourself broke in a GTA game and just pushed on with the story anyway? Well, in GTA 6, that might not be an option. According to Rockstar North co-studio boss Rob Nelson, you'll actually need to make money to keep the narrative moving.
In an interview with IGN from earlier this year that's now been posted in full, Nelson explained that money will play a much bigger role in GTA 6 than in previous entries. "We have made money matter more in this story than I think it has in previous GTA games," he said. That means there will be moments where you have to hit the streets and hustle—whether that's boosting cars and selling them or sticking up places—just to afford the next story mission.
So what does that mean for you? If you're the type who likes to mainline the story and ignore side hustles, you might hit a wall. You'll need to pause the narrative and grind for cash. It's a design choice that could add tension and make every score feel more meaningful. But it also risks becoming a frustrating roadblock if the money-making feels like a chore.
Nelson's comments suggest that Jason and Lucia's financial situation will be woven into the plot. After all, if you can't progress without enough cash, their fortunes (or lack thereof) probably drive the story forward. That could give the game a more grounded, desperate vibe—two criminals trying to survive in a world that won't let them catch a break.
Of course, the big question is balance. Rockstar is known for crafting detailed worlds, but will the money grind feel rewarding or repetitive? Nelson mentions boosting cars and robbing places as examples, which sounds a lot more exciting than, say, working a retail job. As long as the activities are varied and fun, players might not mind the detours.
We're now just weeks away from launch. GTA 6 arrives next month, and fans are eager to see how this new money-focused system plays out. Will it make the story more immersive, or will it just get in the way? Only time will tell.
What do you think? Are you down for a GTA where you actually have to earn your keep, or would you rather just blast through the story? Let us know in the comments!
