New PS5 Firmware Update: Is Sony Beefing Up Security for GTA 6?

Sony's latest PS5 update (version 26.07-14.20.00) improves messages and usability, but it might also patch jailbreak holes ahead of GTA 6's November 19 launch.

New PS5 Firmware Update: Is Sony Beefing Up Security for GTA 6?

Did you notice a new PS5 update pop up? Sony just rolled out another minor firmware patch, and while it looks like business as usual, there's chatter that it could be quietly tightening security before GTA 6 drops.

The update, version 26.07-14.20.00, comes with the usual vague patch notes. Sony says it has "improved the messages and usability on some screens." For most of us, that means a slightly smoother experience and a quick download before jumping into a game. Nothing to write home about, right?

But here's where it gets interesting. The homebrew and jailbreaking crowd is always wary of these updates, and for good reason. Recently, hackers released the "Relapse" exploit, which works on every PS5 firmware before version 14.00.00 (released on September 16). That exploit allowed most retail PS5s to be jailbroken and run pirated games—a nightmare scenario for Sony.

So, while the official notes only mention message improvements, it's possible this new patch is also plugging a few of those jailbreak holes. After all, with Grand Theft Auto 6 set to launch on November 19, Sony has every reason to lock things down. The last thing they want is a wave of pirated copies running on modded consoles.

Over on the PS5 jailbreak subreddit, users are already speculating. Some point out that Sony could make it mandatory for PS5s to be updated to version 14.20 just to run GTA 6. That would force even the most reluctant modders to update if they want to play the biggest game of the year. It's a smart move in the ongoing arms race between Sony and determined hackers.

For the average player, though, this update is just another blip on the radar. You'll download it, maybe notice slightly clearer messages, and get back to gaming. But if you're into homebrew, you might want to hold off on hitting that update button—just in case.

In case you missed it, September's PS5 update was a pretty chunky one. It added a helpful new option for PS5 Pro owners, voice chat improvements, and tweaks to longstanding features. This latest patch is much smaller, but it could have bigger implications behind the scenes.

What do you think? Is Sony quietly preparing for GTA 6 by tightening security, or is this just a routine update? Will you be updating right away, or are you wary of losing jailbreak access? Let us know in the comments!
