Minecraft's Next Game Drop: Ice Caves, Frozen Zombies & More

Did you catch the Minecraft LIVE reveal? Mojang just pulled back the curtain on the next game drop, and it's bringing a serious chill. Ice Caves are officially coming to Minecraft, and they're not just another pretty underground biome—they're a whole new layer of danger and discovery for cold biomes.

So what exactly are Ice Caves? Think rare underground extensions of cold biomes, packed with glowing ice crystals and tons of environmental variety. Mojang says they add a whole new layer of variety to cold biomes, making underground exploration way more interesting. But don't let the pretty lights fool you. "Though they may be beautiful, these caves are far from safe," the developer warned.

Those glowing ice crystals aren't just for show. You can place them vertically or horizontally, giving you tons of potential for decoration and building. They even work as a light source—so your underground builds can get a frosty glow-up without torches.

Now for the mob that'll make you shiver: the Frozen Zombie. This new hostile mob applies a stacking freezing effect with its melee attacks. Take enough hits, and you'll freeze solid. It also throws ice balls at you, which deal damage and apply knockback. And here's a wild detail—normal zombies can convert into Frozen ones when exposed to powder snow. Since players can already convert Husks into Zombies, and now Zombies into Frozen, this opens the door for some seriously advanced mob farms.

When a Frozen Zombie dies, it drops ice balls. You can use them as weapons to deal damage and knockback, or brew them into a new potion that can freeze players. That adds a strategic layer to combat—whether you're fighting mobs or other players. Ice balls can also be crafted, so you won't have to rely solely on drops.

Mojang teased all of this at Minecraft LIVE, and it's clear the team is doubling down on making cold biomes worth exploring again. Between the environmental diversity, the building potential of ice crystals, and the combat tricks from Frozen Zombies, there's a lot to look forward to.
