New StarCraft Revealed: Open-World Shooter, 2030 Launch

Blizzard unveiled a new StarCraft at BlizzCon 2026: an open-world shooter set 70 years after Legacy of the Void, targeting a 2030 release. Here's everything we know.

New StarCraft Revealed: Open-World Shooter, 2030 Launch

Did you ever think you'd see a StarCraft game that isn't an RTS? Well, Blizzard just dropped a bombshell at BlizzCon 2026: a brand-new StarCraft is coming, and it's an open-world shooter. But don't clear your calendar just yet—you'll be waiting a while for this one.

Blizzard is targeting a 2030 release date for StarCraft. That's right, 2030. So why announce it so early? According to Blizzard general manager Dan Hay, the team felt they had made enough progress to finally share it. "There’s a moment when you're making a game where you're like, 'Have we landed the emotion? Do we feel like we have enough of the verve, the identity, and the feel of it to start to share it?'" Hay told GameSpot. "About a year ago, we started to feel like we were there, so we were like, ‘Okay, it’s time to show it. It’s time to get feedback.'" So yes, your feedback matters—even this early.

As for platforms, Blizzard hasn't revealed them yet, but it's a safe bet that PC will be included. And given the 2030 timeframe, we might be playing this on next-gen consoles like Sony's PlayStation 6 and Microsoft's Xbox successor, Project Helix. So if you're planning to upgrade your setup, you've got plenty of time to save up.

Gameplay-wise, StarCraft is a major departure from its RTS roots. It's a third-person experience with a focus on single-player and co-op. You'll step into the power armor of a Dominion Marine, building your reputation and rapport with in-game characters. Hay emphasized the power fantasy: "Combat has to feel powerful. You're in this armor; you're a living tank. You have to feel powerful. When you hold that Gauss rifle, and the thing weighs something ridiculous, you have to feel like you’re just pushing through the Zerg. The Zerg have to feel like those raptorial claws are going to shuck you like an oyster in that thing. So you have to feel the weight of all that." He also mentioned a "notion of disruption"—your actions will have a tangible impact on the world around you.

Is StarCraft a live-service game? Yes and no. While there's a big single-player open-world adventure, Hay said the story will have a definitive conclusion. Blizzard wants it to feel like a "boxed product" that you can return to whenever you want. "We like a named character, right?" Hay said. "When it comes down to this, we want to be able to make sure that what you have is a character that has a name, a character that people in the world can know. What it does is it makes the story have a little bit more life to it."

Story details are still under wraps, but the cinematic trailer showed new Dominion recruits being thrown into a meat-grinder against Zerg forces—and you'll also encounter the Protoss. Hay confirmed that StarCraft is set 70 years after StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void. That's a huge time jump, and it opens up bold storytelling possibilities. Even with the Protoss reclaiming Aiur, the Dominion reformed under Valerian Mengsk, and Zagara aiming to lead the Zerg into peace, nothing is ever certain in the StarCraft galaxy. What happened in those 70 years? We can't wait to find out.

So, what do you think? Are you excited for an open-world StarCraft, or do you wish it stayed true to its RTS roots? Let us know in the comments!
