Xbox Asks You to Trade In Your Dusty Console to Help Beat Shortages

Xbox is emailing US customers to trade in unused Series X/S consoles at Best Buy, as RAM shortages and soaring prices make new hardware scarce ahead of GTA 6.

Xbox Asks You to Trade In Your Dusty Console to Help Beat Shortages

Ever looked at your Xbox Series X or S and realized it's been gathering dust for months? You're not alone, and Xbox has noticed. The company is now sending emails to customers in the US who haven't used their console in a while, gently suggesting they trade it in at Best Buy. The pitch? If you've moved on to Xbox on PC or another way to play, your dormant console could find a new home.

This isn't just a random nudge. The past year has seen console prices skyrocket thanks to what's being called the 'RAMpocalypse'—a component shortage sparked by generative AI companies like OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and even Microsoft itself gobbling up RAM. As these AI giants hoard memory to fuel their models, prices for end users have soared, and hardware has become harder than ever to get hold of.

The knock-on effects are everywhere. Valve's Steam Frame VR machine was originally supposed to launch for $750, but thanks to the crisis created by AI companies, it ended up costing over $1,000. Nvidia graphics cards are also way more expensive than they used to be. And with RAM manufacturers reportedly having already sold their allocated memory capacity for 2027, the situation looks like it'll get worse before it gets better.

So why is Xbox asking for your old console now? Timing is everything. November's launch of GTA 6 is expected to spark a massive surge of interest in all things gaming. Since the game launches on console only, Rockstar's epic is sure to lead to a dramatic rise in PS5 and Xbox Series X and S sales. The only problem is, will Sony and Microsoft be able to meet demand? That's where you come in.

This initiative was actually announced back in June, when Microsoft said these consoles would be refurbished and resold at lower prices to make machines more readily available. "We are working with retail partners on new programs to provide previously played consoles at lower prices," Microsoft said at the time. "Players who are ready to upgrade or no longer use their console will be able to trade it in with participating retail partners for cash or store credit. Those consoles will then be made available at lower prices for players."

The email, verified by Windows Central, reads: "Haven't played on your console in a while? If you've moved on to Xbox on PC or another way to play Xbox games, it may be time to trade in your console to Best Buy." It's a smart way to free up hardware for new players while giving dormant owners some cash or credit.

With GTA 6 on the horizon and hardware shortages biting, your old console might be more valuable than you think. Will you be digging out your dusty Xbox and taking it to Best Buy? Or are you holding onto it for that GTA 6 launch? Let us know in the comments!
