MW4 DMZ Server Crashes Are Eating Your Loot – What's Safe?

Modern Warfare 4's DMZ early access hit server crashes, causing players to lose loot collected mid-match. Infinity Ward says a fix is live, but some players still report issues.

MW4 DMZ Server Crashes Are Eating Your Loot – What's Safe?

Ever lost a rare find in an extraction shooter because the servers decided to take a nap? That's exactly what's happening in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's new DMZ mode. Yesterday, Infinity Ward launched the mode in early access ahead of MW4's full release on Friday, and while the reception has been glowing, server crashes have been robbing players of their hard-earned loot.

Here's the deal: if you disconnect mid-match, you keep the equipment you started with and your progression, but anything you picked up during that run is gone. That means that shiny new weapon or valuable item you just found? Poof. However, loot you already extracted to the FOB and brought back as part of your loadout is safe. So at least your stash isn't completely wiped.

Infinity Ward acknowledged the issue on Twitter/X, saying they've deployed a potential fix and are monitoring results. "Players who disconnected due to this particular issue will retain the equipment they started the match with and their subsequent progression, but not the loot collected during the match," the devs explained. But some players are still reporting problems, so your mileage may vary.

Why not just let players keep everything they had when they crashed? Well, it's tricky. If the game gave back all loot after a disconnect, players could theoretically abuse it to extract valuable items without actually reaching an extraction zone. So the devs are stuck between a rock and a hard place—protecting the game's economy while trying to be fair to players who lost out due to technical issues.

Still, losing something extremely rare because of a server hiccup is incredibly frustrating. Just ask Black Ops 7 players—last year's Endgame mode had similar crash-related loot loss during its first few days. It was eventually fixed, but it left a sour taste for anyone who grinded for hours only to have it undone by something out of their control.

Modern Warfare 4's full release hits on October 23, and the campaign and DMZ modes are available now for owners of the title. If you're diving into DMZ, maybe hold off on that high-stakes run until the servers stabilize? Or risk it for the biscuit—your call.

What do you think—should Infinity Ward do more to compensate players for crash-related losses? Will you be jumping into DMZ despite the issues?
