Dying Light: The Beast Support Ends, Techland CEO Explains Why

Did you just finish clearing the map in Dying Light: The Beast and start wondering what's next? Well, we've got some news that might sting a little. Techland has officially wrapped up major support for The Beast, and the studio's CEO wants you to know exactly why.

During a recent Discord AMA, Techland founder and CEO Paweł Marchewka told fans that The Beast was always designed as a "complete, self-contained game from the start." In his words, it's a finished product you should approach much like Dying Light 1 today, and there are no plans for substantial new content. That's a shift for anyone hoping the standalone zombie adventure would keep growing.

To be fair, Techland didn't leave you empty-handed. Over the past year, The Beast received some solid free updates, including the Restored Land update, which let players clear out zombies across the map and bring a bit of civilization back to the world. New weapons and other goodies also dropped along the way. But the studio never committed to long-term support, and now that chapter is closing.

So why the change in approach? Marchewka was pretty candid about the studio's struggles with its old five-year support model. "It hasn't worked as well for us as we hoped," he said, noting that Techland is an AAA studio that wants each new game to push boundaries. Supporting existing titles for years with smaller teams, he explained, can seriously disrupt work on new projects. And with players expecting frequent, substantial, high-quality updates, sometimes several times a month and usually for free, limited resources can end up disrupting production while still disappointing fans.

Before you panic about the whole franchise, though, here's the good news: Dying Light 2 is still being supported, and it currently has a larger team working on updates than the original Dying Light ever had. So if you're invested in that world, the lights aren't going out just yet.

The bigger picture at Techland is a bit murky, though. The studio's next game was supposed to be a fantasy RPG project, but that was canceled last year. The Xbox One and PS4 versions of The Beast were also canceled earlier this year. As for what Techland is working on next? That remains a mystery for now.

For The Beast players, the takeaway is simple: enjoy the complete game you have, because the content well is officially capped. Will you be jumping back in for one last zombie-clearing run, or are you moving on to something new? What do you think about Techland's approach to game support?
