Could GTA 6's Jason be the first neurodivergent protagonist in the series? Fans certainly think so, and a recent comment from a Rockstar writer has only fueled the fire.
In an interview with Love magazine, longtime Rockstar writer Rupert Humphries discussed how the team shaped Jason and Lucia's personalities. When asked if Jason was a commentary on social class, Humphries said, "We didn't want to make any kind of statement with Jason's backstory. It needs to be understood that he takes the measures he does — drug trafficking and becoming a bank robber, etc. — because of his material circumstances. But a lot of this is up to the player to decide whether he needs to do that, or if it's a choice he makes because he's wired differently from other people."
That phrase — "wired differently" — caught fans' attention. They've been combing through footage of Jason, especially from the August gameplay reveal, looking for clues. In one scene, Jason goes for a handshake and holds his arm out a beat too long, only to pull it back when he realizes the other person has moved on. He also avoids eye contact in some interactions and admits he's anxious about meeting a friend, saying he feels more comfortable with a gun.
Some fans see these as signs of neurodivergence, pointing to traits like social fatigue (getting drained by small talk) and masking (copying others' behaviors to fit in). But others aren't so sure. Jason is ex-military, so he might just be reserved, disciplined, and quiet — not necessarily neurodivergent. Either way, it's clear players are invested in understanding who Jason really is.
We probably won't get much more insight into Jason before launch, outside of maybe one more trailer. GTA 6 is less than 45 days away, and Rockstar is ramping up a massive marketing campaign. You'll see murals and ads in major cities like New York and Miami, and Rockstar is even taking over the Miami Heat for one night only. On November 18, they'll rebrand the team as the Vice City Heat for a regular-season NBA game against the Bucks, complete with a Vice City-themed court in Miami.
So, what do you think? Is Jason neurodivergent, or just a quiet ex-military guy? And will you be picking up GTA 6 when it drops? Let us know in the comments!
