Ever wondered what it's like to step into Proto Man's boots instead of Mega Man's? We just got hands-on with Mega Man: Dual Override, and this time we picked the Red Raider for the entire run.
Right off the bat, Proto Man offers a distinctly different challenge than Mega Man. Not necessarily harder, just different. His moveset and feel change how you approach stages, so you can't just coast on muscle memory from the Blue Bomber.
Here's the key twist: you won't be switching back and forth between the two heroes. At the start of your playthrough, you select which character to control for the entire run. That means one full playthrough as Mega Man, and another as Proto Man if you want to see everything. It's a smart way to add replayability, giving you a reason to dive back in after you've beaten the game once.
During our session, we got a taste of Proto Man's potential, but there's still a lot we don't know. I'm particularly curious about the various chips that can be unlocked, how those will affect gameplay, and what sort of moveset a fully upgraded Proto Man will have at his disposal. Those customization options could really change how each run plays out.
For now, we'll have to wait for Mega Man: Dual Override's launch, scheduled for Spring 2027. That's still a while away, but at least we know the game is shaping up to offer two distinct experiences in one package.
What do you think? Will you be picking Proto Man for your first run, or sticking with the classic Blue Bomber? Let us know in the comments!
